Modi to give top billing to social media at BJP meet

New Delhi: The BJP is pulling all stops to target the youth by focussing on the social media big time in its Lok Sabha election campaign in 2014. The use of social media and modern technology for propaganda is a crucial part of the party’s two-day mega conclave on media management that kickstarts on Saturday.

The conclave will be attended by all the central and state spokespersons, in charges of the BJP’s media departments in all the states and office-bearers of the central media department. But the highlight of the closed-door meeting where media is not allowed will be the evening address of BJP campaign committee chief Narendra Modi on the use of social media.

During meetings with senior BJP leaders, Modi has been harping on targeting the young generation by using social media saying that this generation is yearning for change.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley will inaugurate the two-day exercise in the morning. BJP President Rajnath Singh and L K Advani, too, will address the spokespersons, who will be sensitised in handling the media. Specific do’s and don’ts while handling the media are expected to be laid down during the two-day exercise.

On Sunday, a meeting of the central office bearers, members of the campaign committee and presidents and other office bearers of all the state units will be held. This will be addressed by Modi and all the other central leaders.
The functioning of the central war room, on the lines of the Congress war room, is also likely to be discussed during the two-day exercise.

The central war room will coordinate with the similar war rooms at the state level. Some of these war rooms at the state level are already in existence.

Soon after becoming the chairman of the campaign committee, Modi had shown keen interest in the formation of the war room and had insisted that it operate from 11 Ashoka Road, the party’s headquarters.

In the 2004 elections, the BJP war room operated from the late Pramod Mahajan’s Safdarjang Road residence while in 2009, when Advani was projected as prime minister, it ran from his confidante Ananth Kumar’s residence.

But this time around, Modi insisted that the war room should be set up at the BJP HQ. Sources said that he made it clear that he will not go to residence of any party colleague to review the war room operations. Modi has made it clear that he will himself take regular updates on the war room working
