MLA protests, puts onions in locker!- Breaking news in India

New Delhi/Kanpur: The prices of onions and vegetables, which have already sent the budgets of many homes in the national capital and elsewhere haywire, have led to widespread protests. Only this protest was a bit different and novel too.

Can onion be equated with dollar or even jewellery? Considering the possibilities of its prices going further up so much so much so that the Delhi government plans to seek a ban on onion export, people are taking it to bank to store it in lockers.

“Pyaaj itna mehnga ho gaya ki use chor na le jaayen (I am afraid thieves might steal it, so I have taken onion to the bank to put it in the locker,” says BJP MLA from Kanpur Satish Mahana, who added, this government has “ignored the poor”, for whom the most basic thing is two loaves of bread. Considering that onion prices, hovering over Rs 60, might touch Rs 100, it is looking difficult for them to make ends meet, Mahana said, adding, “so we stumbled upon the unique idea (for a token protest) to send a message to the government” that it would ignore the poor at its own peril. “We requested Mahanasaheb to complete certain formalities to open a locker, which he did,” said a bank official.
