New Delhi: BJP campaign panel chief Narendra Modi came in for sharp criticism from his own party even as the Congress on Thursday decried him for attacking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Congress launched a blistering attack on the Gujarat chief minister, saying Independence Day is not an occasion for “partisan debates and power hungry squabbles” and political parties should not look for self-seeking opportunities.
“I heard the Prime Minister today...Today on Independence Day, without criticising anybody, we all should realise that India has unlimited potential for the future,” he said. Backing Advani, Shiv Sena said there are 364 other days in the year to comment on the Prime Minister. “We have the entire year ahead of us to comment on what the Prime Minister says. Today we must listen to him and let the criticism for some other day,” Sena leader Sanjay Raut said. Leaders should try to avoid politics on the occasion of Independence Day, Raut told PTI in Mumbai.
“The Prime Minister’s speech on the occasion is a non-partisan national statement of intent and purpose,” AICC General Secretary and in-charge of party’s communication department Ajay Maken said.
The war of words between Modi and Congress appeared to touch a new low, with Union Minister Salman
Khurshid wondering whether Modi was a “villain (Khalnayak)”.
