India’s first ‘military’ satellite launched successfully-Breaking news in India

Bangalore: India’s first ‘military’ satellite (GSAT-7) was successfully put into the geosynchronous transfer orbit early Friday by the European Space Agency’s (ESA) heavy rocket, authorities said.

It was launched in the early hours from its spaceport at Kourou in French Guiana off the Pacific coast.
The advanced multi-band communication satellite was deployed in the transfer orbit, around 36,000 km from above the earth, by the Ariane-5 rocket of the ESA’s Arianespace 34 minutes after its lift-off at 2 a.m. IST,” the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said in a statement here.

The Indian space agency’s Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan, about 180 km from Bangalore, acquired signals from the 2.5-tonne dedicated spacecraft five minutes before it was separated from the rocket. The cost of the launch onboard the commercial Arianespace rocket is Rs.470 crore.

According to defence experts, the satellite will enable the navy to acquire Blue Water capabilities and it need not depend on foreign satellites like Inmarsat, which provides communication services to its ships.

The spacecraft is equipped with transponders in Ku band, S band, C band and UHF (ultra high frequency) band to improve the maritime communications among the Indian Navy’s warships.“The satellite’s solar panels were deployed soon after it was placed in the orbit for generating 2,900 watt power.

Initial checks have indicated its health is normal,” the ISRO statement noted. The MCF will raise the Rs.185-crore satellite’s orbit by firing its 440 Newton liquid apogee motors from its propulsion subsystem Saturday to place it in the intended geostationary orbit by Sep 4.A 108 Ampere-Hour Lithium-Ion battery enables the satellite to function even during the eclipse period.

UP police to question Yasin Bhatkal-Breaking news in India

Lucknow: A team of anti-terror squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh police left for New Delhi late Thursday to interrogate Indian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal, officials said.

Bhatkal who was arrested from the India-Nepal border Thursday is wanted in the Sheetla Ghat blasts in Varanasi in 2010 and the police will seek his transit remand, an official said.

Another terrorist arrested with Bhatkal, Asadullah Akhtar alias ‘Haddi’, also a resident of Azamgarh, however is not wanted in any case in Uttar Pradesh.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) R.K. Vishwakarma told IANS that serial blasts had rocked Varanasi’s Sheetla Ghat Sep 7, 2010 during the evening Ganga aarti, killing three and injuring many.

IM had claimed responsibility of the blasts through an e-mail, the official added.“Since he was out of the hands of law, there has been no evidence against him so far. But we propose to interrogate him now and bring him to UP for interrogation,” officials said.

Bhatkal’s accomplice Asadullah is a resident of Baj Bahadur locality in Azamgarh and has no case registered against him in UP.

How Yasin Bhatkal was caught in the net-Breaking news in India

New Delhi: Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal may have evaded the law for long, but he ran out of luck on Wednesday. Sources in Delhi Police special cell who have been tracking IM for eight years say it’s a two-year long operation in which Yasin was successful in carrying out four strikes and over 18 militants were arrested from its Bihar module.

Breaking news in India

For over 10 months, the plot for the 2010 failed terror strike at Jama Masjid had not been cracked till security agencies spotted a man who was being treated in a hospital in Dharbhanga.
The limp and the fact that he was being treated for bullet injury raised doubts. He was picked up and questioned. It turned out that he was Mohammed Adil, a Pakistani militant, who had fired at a Taiwanese national and accidentally got injured.
Adil’s arrest led to the busting of IM’s Bihar module. Other IM operatives Gauhar, Md Irshad and Qateel Siddiqui were picked up subsequently. Siddiqui (later found dead under suspicious circumstances) gave an insight into Yasin Bhatkal. In Dharbhanga, he was Dr Imran and in Delhi he married Md Irshad’s wife. For 18 months, Yasin operated a gun factory on the outskirts of Delhi-Haryana border and also became a father.
But this trail to nab Bhatkal died soon. In January 2011, security agencies came close to nabbing him in Mumbai but the special cell and Maharashtra ATS fought with each other over detention of an informer and he managed to escape.
Death of Qateel Siddiqui in Yerwada Jail spurred Yasin again. This time Riaz and Iqbal Bhatkal told him not only to avenge Qateel’s death but also avenge killing of Rohingaya Muslims in Bihar and strike in Hyderabad.
This time he tapped radicalised youth in Aurangabad, who were motivated by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Fayaz Kagzi in Saudi.
Reconnaissance was done in three cities by Syed Maqbool Imran and Irfan. Interestingly, Yasin introduced himself as Shahrukh and chatted with them through social networking site.
Some say ISI and Riaz was unhappy with him for carrying out a failed strike in Bodh Gaya as he was running out of resources and men.

Mithilanchal a safe hideout for Yasin-Breaking news in India

Patna: Before he was caught in a joint operation by the intelligence agencies and Bihar police from the Indo-Nepal border, Indian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal destroyed the lives of several Bihar youth, making Mithilanchal a safe hideout. His grip on his network on the border areas was so strong that he could have got executed anything he wanted.
On the trail of various blasts, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had arrested many terrorists. It came to be known that Yasin had a deep connection with Bihar, especially Mithilanchal, having made Jamalchak village under Mabbi police station in Darbhanga district his earliest hideout. To some he was ‘Imran’, to others it was ‘Dr Saheb’, plotting attacks and recruiting innocent youth, many of whom never met him directly. IM operative Kafeel used to introduce them to Yasin. It was corroborated after Kafeel’s arrest, as confirmed by police station in-charge S.K. Chowdhary. Yasin’s other hideout was at Samaila village under Kewati block in Darbhanga district. He continued to dodge police amid arrests of so many IM operatives from poverty-stricken Mithilanchal -- which he seemed to make his own recruiting youths in hordes -- especially from Madhubanmi since 2006 namely Md Kamal Ansari, Md Madani, Md Afzal, Guel Ahmed Jamali, Qateel Siddiqui, Nadim Naqqi, Kafeel Ahmed and Fasih Masood.
While investigating agencies zeroed in on Mithilanchal, Bihar cadre IPS officer Vikas Vaibhav used his expertise on the IM network after he joined the NIA, resulting in the arrest of Danish in January 2013 from Laheriasarai. Danish’s arrest helped the NIA make a list of 36 terrorists. Danish told the cops that Md Tahsim alias Monu from Samastipur had introduced him to IM kingpin Yasin in Delhi. Tahsim told Danish he would help him get a seat in an engineering college. This was one of the many ploys Yasin ans his aides used to lure youths into the bad business.

BJP may anoint Modi on Sept 5-Breaking news in India

New Delhi: Setting all speculations aside, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is all set to anoint BJP campaign panel chief Narendra Modi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate for the upcoming general elections 2014. The announcement may be made by party president Rajnath Singh on September 5 in Delhi.

Breaking news in India

Despite the party heavyweights like Lal Krishna Advani, Murali Manohar Joshi and Sushma Swaraj objecting to Modi’s candidature, Sangh wants to formally announce his name for the top job in order to clear any misgivings. Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat, accompanied by other leaders such as Suresh Soni and others, have already arrived in the national capital on Thursday for a three-day visit. Sangh has two clear agendas: putting a seal of approval on Modi’s name as the PM candidate and giving a boost to the old agenda of the organisation. It may be recalled that Sangh had said that leaders beyond 75 years of age should take retirement from active politics and become mentors to the new crop of youth leaders.

Sources say that Sangh doesn’t want two power centres in the party with Advani spearheading the group of dissidents’ leaders such as Jaswant Singh and Murali Manohar Joshi, whose views are often different from that of Modi.
Sources say that Sangh is not happy with leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj’s tweet through which she had expressed her wish to share her views with the youth of the nation by visiting colleges and universities after the monsoon session as the concept was already initiated by the Gujarat chief minister who had visited Shri Ram College of Commerce in
Delhi and Pune’s Fergusson College, for which he had received accolades.

The Sangh leadership also wants to make sure that no one poses challenge to Modi’s PM candidature. Modi’s close confidants say that astrologers have suggested him that stars would favour September 5 as the date of announcement for his candidature and the Gujarat CM has already conveyed his sentiments to Rajnath and the RSS chief. Senior BJP leader and leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley has openly spoken about the need to announce Modi’s name now. Rajnath too has accepted Jaitley’s views on several occasions.

Sangh wants to send a clear message to senior leaders Advani, Joshi and Jaswant Singh, who were eyeing Bhopal, Allahabad and a seat of Rajasthan respectively, that they will be brought into the Rajya Sabha and will not contest the 2014 Lok Sabha election.
The three big heavyweights are in a state of shock with the decision. During his Delhi stay, Bhagwat is all set to express the party’s sentiment to the leaders that the decision taken for them won’t be compromised and has to be implemented in compulsion.

Breaking news in India

Home Minister Shinde has confirmed the arrest, he said “Yasin Bhatkal and his close-aide were caught last night by Bihar police and are being interrogated.”

“Yasin has been traced and he is under the custody of the Bihar Police. The interrogation is going on. Till now, this is the only information,” Shinde told reporters outside Parliament House. Asked as to which agency picked him up, the Minister said, “intelligence agencies” but refused to disclose their names.

According to E Newspaper of India sources, National Security Advisor has met Prime Minister Manmohan Sing and has briefed him about the arrest of Bhatkal.

Bhaktal who is believed to be involved in the 2012 Pune bomb blasts and  is said to have been the one who planted the bomb in the German Bakery bomb blasts was reportedly caught near Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh, after a tip-off from the FBI to the NIA.
30-year-old Bhatkal, one of India’s most wanted terrorists, had been on the run for over five years. Bhatkal, also known as Mohammed Ahmed Siddhibappa, along with three aides Tahaseen Akhtar Wasim Aktar Shaikh (23), Asadulla Akhtar Javed Akhtar (26) and Waqas alias Ahmed (26), was allegedly behind three
coordinated bomb explosions at Opera House, Zaveri Bazaar and Dadar West in Mumbai on July 13, 2011 that left 27 dead and 130 injured.

The IM leader is wanted in a string of terror attacks in Ahmedabad, Surat, Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad.
Bhatkal, co-founded the Indian Mujahideen in 2008 with Riyaz Bhatkal and Abdul Subhan Qureshi. He hails from Karntaka. The IM is sponsored and patronized by Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Taiba, according to intelligence agencies.

Delhi to see onions from Iran, China-Breaking news in India

New Delhi: Often termed as a luxurious food crop in recent times, onions are likely to witness a steep fall in the price in Delhi soon. The state government has given its nod to local traders for importing onions from countries like China and Iran.

Breaking news in India

With the onion price having witnessed a skyrocketing rise in the recent days, a hapless Sheila Dikshit-led Delhi government asked the traders for a solution to the prevalent crisis.
With elections a few months away, the government did not want to face a crisis such as the one encountered by the erstwhile NDA government in 2004 polls due to onions. After the traders used their contacts, it was found that onions could be imported from neighbouring countries like China and Iran known for bigger onions and better quality than their Indian counterparts.
It has been decided that the imported crops will be sold at Rs 27/kg as compared to about Rs 90/kg. An aggressive BJP has launched a blistering attack on the Delhi government, accusing it of “total failure” in containing prices of onion, other vegetables and essential commodities and burdening people with high power tariff.

Re dips: Experts see hard times-Breaking news in India

New Delhi: The falling rupee seems to have exposed government’s tall claims about the Indian economy. While the nation was staring at an imminent economic crisis, it was busy trying its ambitious bill Food Bill passed, costing the national exchequer Rs 1,25,000 crore.
However, hardly had the euphoria died down, the government came face-to-face with the hard reality, with the rupee’s fall creating a new record. No wonder, Commerce Minister Anand Sharma has hinted on using country’s gold reserves to contain the current account deficit (CAD) even as experts and analysts see troubled times ahead. “We are looking at inflation going further up,” market analyst Sunil Shah told News 24.
With the Rupee plunging to a record low of 68.80 against the US dollar, the Opposition targeted the government, with former finance minister Sinha saying the only thing that can stabilize the situation is for the government to resign and go for fresh elections.

Breaking news in India

Meanwhile, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram is ready with some medicines for a sluggish market and falling rupee, including promoting exports, reviving investments, containing fiscal and current account deficits, raising capex of PSUs, recapitalising PSU banks. Chidambaram said, "If we are patient, firm and clear headed and once we take these steps, the economy will begin to turn and we will be able to build a strong economy."
But Sharma's suggestion to "monetise" gold to set things right has belied the government claims that has been claiming external forces are responsible for the current crisis. Experts believe if the basic shortcomings had been heeded, things could have been better.
Economist NarendraTaneja says, “the UPA doesn’t care for the government. It aims at only vote bank.”
The irony is Sharma’s suggestion has come at a time when India has left the 1990 crisis far behind. We are living in the times of market and globalised economy. However, it would be grave mistake to undermine investors’ sentiment who should be wary of India’s bureaucracy, policy paralysis, falling credit rating amid a resurgence US economy.

New Delhi: The Special Protection Group is leaving no stones unturned to track Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s personal mobile phone, which was stolen about two days ago.

Sources told E Newspaper of India that Sonia’s mobile has been missing since she had complained of chest pain and uneasiness during the discussion on Food Security Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
The Congress president was immediately rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment and was discharged a few hours later. It is learnt that Sonia, who was busy with activities in the House and was suffering from moderate fever, did not notice her phone.
According to reports, after her illness in Parliament, she was also taken to room No 14 of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs for brief stay. Sources said that the SPG is trying its best to trace the Blackberry phone as it is supposed to have sensitive information concerning the Congress party and the central government. Even though it is certain that the mobile phone is stolen as it is currently switched off, what needs to be known is where the Congress president left it. Was it in the AIIMS where she was accompanied by son Rahul Gandhi and Union minister Kumari Selja? Or did she lose it while exiting the Parliament complex? Or did somebody steal it.

After Shotgun, Amritsar MP Sidhu declared ‘missing’-Breaking news in India

Amritsar: It is a song from the golden era the colourful cricketer-turned-politician would have loved all his life. However, the song from Sazaa(1951) must be making Navjot Sidhu see red these days.
Breaking news in India

“Tum Na Jaane Kis Jahan Mein Kho Gaye”, sung by Lata Mangeshkar, screams from posters of the BJP MP in Amritsar where he is in news for wrong reasons.

Actually, you will see him on various channels, but not with people he represents. And upset with the prolonged absence of the BJP MP from his constituency, an NGO in Amritsar has put up “missing” posters promising a reward of Rs 2 lakh for anybody who would bring the parliamentarian to the city.

Interestingly, this comes soon after another BJP MP’s posters were doing the rounds recently mocking at his absence from his constituency. That was Patna Sahib MP Shatrughan Sinha, who had been declared “missing” on posters put up around his home town. Raman Bakshi, president of Amritsar Sangharsh Samiti, said they were extremely upset about Sidhu’s absence at a time when their representative was required to be present in the area.

Alleging that Sidhu had been “missing” from the area, a poster states, “Sidhu had made tall promises to the people of his constituency about making Amritsar like Paris, but has betrayed them”.

Breaking news in India
“Our Web site was unavailable to users in the United States for a period of time yesterday. The outage was the result of an external attack on our domain name registrar, and we are at work on fully restoring service,” The New York Times said in a message posted on its website.
The New York Times chief information officer Marc Frons sent the same update internally to employees at 4:20 PM and advised them not to send out sensitive emails ‘until this situation is resolved,’ according to a statement from the New York Times.
Frons said the attack was carried out by a group known as “the Syrian Electronic Army” or someone trying very hard to be them.
“The Web site first went down after 3 PM; once service was restored, the hackers quickly disrupted the site again.
Shortly after 6 PM, Frons said that “we believe that we are on the road to fixing the problem.”
The Syrian Electronic Army is a group of hackers who support President Bashar al-Assad of Syria.
Matt Johansen, head of the Threat Research Centre at White Hat Security, posted on Twitter that he was directed to a Syrian Web domain when he tried to view The Times’s Web site, the daily said.  “In terms of the sophistication of the attack, this is a big deal,” Frons said.

Victim’s father wants Bapu held-Breaking news in India

New Delhi: The father of the 15-year-old who accused self-styled godman Asaram  of sexually assaulting her in his ashram in Jodhpur has said that he wants the ‘baba’ behind bars.
The father of the victim said “The baba took my daughter to his private quarters in Jodhpur asharam to perform some ritual to ward off evil spirit. Then he assaulted her.”
A regular contributor to Asaram Bapu’s trust, the father says he had taken his daughter to the spiritual leader as she had been unwell. He said we were told she is under some magical spell which baba can resolve by performing religious rites. When we went to the asharam, ‘He did not let us inside the room. He tried to silence her...told her ‘my gunmen are outside, be quiet or they will kill you and your parents’.
The family claims they have been receiving threatening calls from Asaram’s men, and have been threatened by officials to keep the matter under wraps, but they are determined to fight it for their daughter’s honour.
In her statement to the police, the girl said the 72-year-old yoga guru tried to force himself on her and threatened to hurt her and her family if she dared to reveal what happened. The father said, his daughter was scared to reveal the truth and told the incident to her mother when we reached home on Aug 19.
Meanwhile, Asaram Bapu sought more time from the Jodhpur police for appearing before it for
questioning.

Rahul sees Dalits as Cong backbone-Breaking news in India

New Delhi: Hoping that Dalits will be the backbone of the Congress in time to come, party Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said he would strive to bring forward leadership from the community in the coming elections.

Breaking news in India

Reaching out to Dalits, the Gandhi scion said, “It will be our effort to give maximum representation to Dalits in coming elections.

He promised to open “locked doors” for Dalits and attacked BSP supremo Mayawati for not grooming leadership.Rahul said BSP founder Kansi Ram started a movement to empower Dalits but it came to a standstill after he died.

“You ask in UP for five Dalit leaders and the answer you will hear is Mayawati, Mayawati, Mayawati, Mayawati and Mayawati... I want that there should be a queue of leaders at all levels, in UP, Delhi, at block levels, in villages...,” he said.

Rahul was addressing a meet, National Dialogue on Social Disparity, organised by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes in New Delhi.

He said he would stand by them to ensure their progress irrespective of the amount of time it takes.

No political party was giving equal rights to Dalits, he said, adding a systemic discrimination against the community existed.

He vowed to fight against it and said it would be a long battle.

He said a few people in each party decide on who would fight elections.

There may be 100 such people in Congress, 80 in BJP, two or three in SP and one in BSP, Rahul said, calling for a change in the present order so that leaders were thrown up from among the people.

Rahul also spoke on his travel through Uttar Pradesh and said Dalits were discriminated.

In schools, when I asked teachers who were the most intelligent students in their classes, they pointed to some sitting in the front bench while those in the back-benches were least bright, he said, adding that upper castes students would be in front benches while Dalits sat in back benches.

Rahul has been making concerted attempts to win back Dalit support base from BSP in Uttar Pradesh, which would be an important factor in its electoral fortune in the polls scheduled for early next year, but without much success.

He mentioned Food Security Bill, passed by Lok Sabha yesterday and is being seen by the ruling party as a game-changer before elections, and Right to Information Act to stress his party’s commitment to people’s welfare.

“Dalits will have to keep faith in Congress,” he said.

Congress MP from Barabanki and chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes P.L. Punia said whatever has been done till date for Dalits is done by the Congress only. “Indiraji gave this programme to put additional budget for the SC and ST categories. Right of education, Right of Empowerment or the forest rights of tribal have been established for their benefit. Mayawatiji has done nothing. She sent here a letter that they won’t implement this programme due to the lack of finances,” Punia added.

Kohli spotted with mystery girl

Mumbai: It seems that Indian vice-captain Virat Kohli is smitten by the love bug. The 24-year-old swashbuckling batsman was spotted on Monday night with his supposedly new girlfriend.

Kohli and his new “girlfriend” had gone to watch John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri-starrer Madras Café at a plush theatre in the metropolis. After the film ended, the couple came out of the theatre unaware that the shutterbugs were already deployed to capture them. As soon as they saw the camera, a visibly shocked damsel immediately went back into the theatre. However, Virat, who is known for his bold image, kept standing outside. A few minutes later, Kohli and his partner rushed towards their car and left.

While the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper kept on gazing at the camera, his beau seemed to be embarrassed on being caught red-handed. She hid herself behind a newspaper and tried her best to avoid being clicked again.

It is not the first instance when the current Indian Vice-captain has been spotted with a woman. Last year in June, Virat was spotted on the streets of Singapore with an unidentified girl. The pictures had triggered immense speculations with the gossip mongers having merry time writing endlessly about the cricketer.

With Virat having a successful run with the bat and runs flowing endlessly in all formats, it is not wrong for any pretty woman to fall for his charm. The dashing Delhi batsman had recently taken to micro blogging site twitter and siad that he is getting ready for the big season that he was physically and mentally in shape to take up the coming challenges.

Cops may issue lookout notice against Asaram

Indore: The Jodhpur police on Tuesday arrived at Asaram Bapu’s ashram in Indore, Madhya Pradesh to issue summons to the godman in connection with the sexual assault case filed against him. However, Asaram refused to accept the summons and his supporters told the police to leave.

Sources said that the police might issue a lookout notice against the self style godman. Once the notice is issued, Asaram will not be allowed to travel anywhere abroad.

The spiritual guru has been asked to appear before police on 30 August where he would be questioned over the sexual assault allegations leveled against him by a minor girl. The self-styled godman claimed that he was innocent and regards the minor as his “daughter”. His spokesman also denied the charges against him.

Asaram has been booked under sections 376, 342, 506 and 509 of the IPC, section 8 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and sections 23 and 26 of the Juvenile Justice Act.In the coming days, Asaram may have to face punishment under some of the stringent Sections of the IPC.

Contrary to the media reports, the Jodhpur Police said it has not revoked Section 376 (rape) against Asaram as it was inducted by the Delhi Police in its FIR.

Police summon Asaram by Aug 30-Breaking news in India

Jodhpur: Tough times lie ahead of Asaram Bapu, who has been accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl in his ashram in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

Breaking news in India

The police on Monday summoned the self-styled godman for questioning giving him a deadline of August 30 as its investigations corroborated the complainant’s accusations.

In the coming days, Asaram may have to face punishment under some of the stringent Sections of the IPC.

Contrary to the media reports, the Jodhpur Police said it has not revoked Section 376 (rape) against Asaram as it was inducted by the Delhi Police in its FIR. Even the Delhi Police issued a statement mentioning that the victim’s medical examination suggests that she had been sexually assaulted and hence the godman was charged with Section 376.

“We have not revoked the Section 376 from the FIR,” Ajay Pal Lamba, DCP Jodhpur, told this newspaper.    It appears that the Jodhpur Police will not remove the section from the FIR and leave it for the court to decide as the matter is sensitive in nature.

If police sources are to be believed, the charges made by the victim have been established against Asaram. The police said that a notice was sent to Asaram Bapu, asking him to appear for questioning in connection with a sexual assault case.

Lok Sabha passes Food Bill-Breaking news in India

New Delhi: Lok Sabha on Monday passed UPA’s landmark Food Security Bill, seeking to provide food at highly subsidised rates to 67 per cent - 800 million - of India’s 1.2 billion people.Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said the BJP would support the Bill despite it being “half-baked and weak”.
Breaking news in India

Earlier, on Monday, the Bill was taken up in Lok Sabha with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi asking all parties to set aside differences and ensure its unanimous passage, even as outside ally SP demanded it be put in abeyance till states are consulted. Main Opposition BJP called it a “Vote Security Bill”. The food security bill was first introduced in Parliament in December 2011.

Later, the government brought an ordinance for the same which has been replaced by the bill being debated.

BJP dubbed the measure as “vote security bill” and picked holes as he questioned as to how it would be implemented and who would be the beneficiaries.

Initiating the debate after Food Minister KV Thomas moved the bill for consideration, Murli Manohar Joshi (BJP) said he was in favour of the legislation that will provide highly subsidised food to two-third of the country’s population.

At the same time, he said there were flaws in the bill which should be rectified.

Suggesting that the bill had been brought with an eye on the elections, Joshi said, “In 2009, the then President of India in his Address had talked about Food Security Bill. But you have brought this bill when you are going out...”

“The question is not whether we have enough resources or not and whether it would benefit the farmers or not. We have to arrange resources for it. We have to do it,” Gandhi said in the House where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was present.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav contended that the bill was being brought with an eye on elections and said it should be kept in abeyance till Chief Ministers are consulted as it would put additional burden on states. With agency inputs

Key elements of Food Bill

* Nation’s two-third population to get 5 kg of foodgrain every month, at highly subsidised rates of Rs 1-3 per kg.

* The government to spend Rs 1,25,000 crore annually on supply of food grains to 67 per cent of the population.

* Work of identification of eligible households is left to the states/UTs.

* If foodgrain is not provided, beneficiaries will get an equivalent amount transferred to their bank accounts linked to  the Aadhar cards.

* Wheat will be available at Rs 2 per kg, rice at Rs 3 per kg and coarse grain at Re.1 per kg.

* BPL, APL and slum ration card holders will be included.

Bill a historic step: Cong chief

New Delhi: Making a strong pitch for the smooth passage of the Food Security Bill, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said on Monday India is making history by promising to provide cheap staple food to two-thirds of the Indian  population.

Speaking on the discussion in Lok Sabha on Food Bill, Gandhi said, “I am standing in support of Food Bill. It’s time to take the historic step.”

Declaring Congress’ goal to “wipe out hunger and malnutrition”, Gandhi asked all parties to set aside differences and support the Food Security Bill so that a “big message” could be sent out.

“We are open to constructive criticism,” she said reading from a written statement.Opposition BJP said “this is not a Food  Security Bill but a vote security bill”, with senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi accusing the government of fooling the  people and questioning the delay in bringing the bill.

Asaram compares himself to Lord Buddha

breaking news in india
New Delhi: Self styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is under scanner for sexually assaulting a minor girl in his Jodhpur Ashram, has now triggered another controversy by comparing his case to Lord Buddha. Denying the charges of sexual assault, Asaram said, “Even lord Buddha had to face such allegations. I am innocent. If I’m guilty, then prove it.”

The spiritual guru seemed to be calm about the whole controversy. He also said, “Even if they put me behind the bars, I am willing to go to jail with a smiling face. And I think I want to spend some time in Tihar jail. I consider jail as my Vaikunth (heaven).”

BJP eyes more than 272 seats in 2014 polls

New Delhi: It was “Mission 272+” for the Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday, focusing on their aim to acquire more than 272 Lok Sabha seats in the next general elections to form a government on its own.

Addressing a meeting of the party’s election campaign committee here, BJP president Rajnath Singh asked the cadres to make the mission a success and work towards winning assembly elections to four big states later this year.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who is chief of BJP’s campaign committee for 2014 elections and party’s possible prime ministerial candidate, said comprehensive victory can be achieved through detailed planning and proper implementation of decisions.
“All out effort should be made to take all sections of society with the party and strengthen the organization in the next 200 days,” Modi said. He called upon panels set up to deal with election work to work with more speed.
According to a party release, Modi “guided the deliberations about effective campaigning and urgency to reach out to each voter”. Modi told the gathering that people were eager to throw Congress out at the first available opportunity.
In his speech, Rajnath Singh said the mood of people was favourable for BJP and the party can win the four assembly polls and realise its target of getting majority on its own in the Lok Sabha polls by winning over 272 seats.
“The mood of the nation reflects this mission as an achievable target,” he said.
Rajnath Singh attacked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for “failing to manage the economy” and said it had resulted in more and more hardships to people. He said people were suffering due to price rise and the continuous depreciation of rupee reflected inability of the government to improve the economy. The party also demanded the sacking of Delhi Food and Civil Supplies Minister Haroon Yusuf for his failure to curb the rise in onion prices. “The Delhi BJP demands that the food and civil supplies minister should be immediately sacked for his complete failure to curb onion prices,” said Vijay Goel.
