RSS wants Advani to declare Modi’s name

New Delhi: The Advani camp in the Bharatiya Janata Party has finally agreed to toe the Sangh’s line over declaring Narendra Modi as party’s PM candidate after a two-day meeting between the RSS and the BJP to iron out differences over the contentious issue ended Monday.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had a 25-minute chat with Advani after the meet. Sources said Sangh wants Advani himself to announce Modi’s name. The announcement is likely any day before September 19, when the inauspicious pitra paksh in the Hindu calendar sets in. Sources said it was decided that BJP chief Rajnath Singh will hold the parliamentary board meet soon after which Modi’s name will be announced.

The Sangh swung into action last evening to resolve the differences over Modi’s candidature. Sangh leaders Madan Das Devi, Bhaiyyaji Joshi and Dattatreya Hosbole held detailed talks with Rajnath Singh. Subsequently, Joshi and Devi spoke to Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan telephonically.

Like Advani, Chouhan, too, was initially against declaring Modi’s name before the assembly polls in Nvember. The Advani camp had argued that this will polarise voters and affect BJP’s chances in the assembly polls.

However, after the two-day meet, the Advani camp, as well as those like Chouhan, have dropped their reservations over the timing of announcement.
