Prosecution seeks death sentence

New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Wednesday sought maximum punishment for the four held guilty in the December 16 gangrape case. A fast track court on Tuesday held the four adult accused guilty of murdering and raping a 23-year-old physiotherapy student in a moving bus in south Delhi.
While the prosecution demanded death sentence by arguing that “deviance of this nature should not be tolearated”, the defence counsels said that the maximum punishment in such cases is life imprisonment.
Experts say that the court’s appreciation for Delhi police may help the prosecution in securing a harsh sentence for Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Kumar.
On Tuesday, in an interview with News24, December 16 gangrape victim’s parents said they are hopeful that all four accused will get capital punishment as they have been charged in all the sections by the Delhi court.
They said though the juvenile’s verdict was already given by the board, they would approach the court to seek harsher punishment for his offence. “It was meaningless for us, and we will approach the court for sterner punishment for him,” the braveheart’s mother said. When asked whether the verdict will bring peace to their daughter’s soul, she said it was a reprieve for all and certainly more so for the victim who had undergone unfathomable pain.
