Muzaffarnagar: PM, Sonia assure help to riot victims

Muzaffarnagar: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accompanied by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday visited riot-hit regions of the Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh.
The leaders met people affected in communal violence and assured all possible help to rehabilitate them.

“It was a very tragic incident and those who are guilty should be punished. Our priority will be that people displaced (in clashes) feel secure and arrangements are made for their safety till they return home,” the Prime Minister said.
He added that the state government should o ensure the safety of locals and restore normalcy in the violence-hit areas of the district.
Meanwhile, the Bhartitya Janata Party dubbed PM and Sonia’s visit to Muzaffarnagar as “secular tourism”. BJP said that their visit will make no impact on the ground as the Centre has no policy to avoid clashes among the communities.
The Uttar Pradesh state Assembly witnessed uproar over Muzaffarnagar violence. The Bahujan Samaj Party members staged a walk out from the house shouting slogans against the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP government. They charged Samajwadi Party of match fixing with BJP on the riots.
The Central government on Monday also filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court over notice issued in the Muzaffarnagar violence. The government stated in its reply that 78 companies of paramilitary forces were sent in the affected region. Around 44 people were killed and 97 injured in the riots. The government also said that it will provide financial help to the
affected people from the Prime Minister’s relief fund.
