New Delhi: The pro-Narendra Modi camp in the BJP breathed a sigh of relief on Friday as the Uttar Pradesh government ordered the cancellation of L.K. Advani’s public rally in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra on 15 September.
Officials said that the district administration cancelled permission for the rally after reviewing the situation in the state in the wake of communal riots in Muzaffaranagar.
The rally, to be held about 350 km from Lucknow, was to be addressed by L.K. Advani and BJP general secretary Varun Gandhi. The BJP had been making elaborate arrangements for the rally over the past month.
Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh administration had given its nod for the rally. As the news of the cancellation of permission for the rally spread, angry BJP workers raised anti-government slogans and charged Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his government of working under the pressure of state Minority Affairs Minister Mohammad Azam Khan.
However, the news of cancelation came as respite for Modi supporters who were apprehensive that t Advani might obliquely make public some of his concerns that he raised over the issue of Gujarat Chief Minister as prime ministerial candidate.
The BJP patriarch is learnt to be strongly against the idea of announcing Narendra Modi’s name as party’s prime ministerial candidate as he fears that it will affect party’s poll prospects in 2014.
