Death toll climbs to 38, CM assures strict action

Muzaffarnagar: The death toll in riot-hit Muzaffarnagar rose to 38 on Tuesday even as curfew remained in force and police filed cases against hundreds of unknown people and arrested over 90. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said that the state government officials were monitoring the situation and that strict action would be taken against those found guilty. “Security forces will be posted in all affected areas and we will rehabilitate the riot-hit,” he said. 
Earlier, on Monday, the Centre offered to provide additional paramilitary forces to Uttar Pradesh to assist the local administration in dealing with the situation. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to the UP CM and assured all possible support from the Centre.
Top state officials including the Saharanpur Divisional Commissioner SK Srivastava, DIG DC Mishra and Meerut IG Brijbhushan had been shunted out. Meanwhile, under fire over the violence, the Uttar Pradesh government had transferred Muzaffarnagar SSP Subhash Dubey and Shamli SP Abdul Hamid. 


The Uttar Pradesh government had submitted its report to MHA, which said that no untoward incident has been reported since Sunday afternoon, MoS Home RPN Singh said. 
“Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde is in touch with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav,” Singh 
had said.
