New Delhi: The split within the BJP over Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate has come out in the open with the pro and anti-Advani camp engaging in Tweet war over the issue. It all started with a tweet from senior BJP leader from Bihar, Sushil Modi, after BJP President Rajnath Singh’s efforts to convince LK Advani over Narendra Modi’s candidature failed.
Sushil Modi tweeted: “Advaniji has failed to gauge the public mood. Advaniji himself declared Atalji as PM candidate. Now also he could have done the same for NaMo.” This triggered a Tweet war within Advani’s aide Sudheendra Kulkarni and Subramanian Swamy, who recently joined the BJP, stepping in. Kulkarni tweeted: “I doubt if a leader who has polarized his own party can run a smooth, stable and effective government at the Centre? THINK SERIOUSLY.”
“Advani was the favoured candidate for PM in 1996. But he chose then to make a sacrifice then. It is wrong to say PM aspiration is behind it,” tweeted Swamy.
Sources within the BJP do not rule out the possibility of the party declaring Modi’s name in the same manner as the party’s Goa meet, where his name was declared as the party’s campaign committee chief. Advani had opposed this decision by boycotting the Goa meet and had even resigned from all party posts in protest.
Sources confirmed that Rajnath Singh, who is apprehensive that Advani may not attend the Parliamentary board to register his protest, may meet Advani camp leader Sushma Swaraj later in the day to find an amicable solution.
