New Delhi: A catfight brews between Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Leader of the Opposition in the House Sushma Swaraj who are all set to cross swords over the appointment of the next Secretary-General of the House.

The term of the present secretary general, T K Vishwanathan, expires this month-end and sources say that Kumar has every intention to give him an extension. But Swaraj is against a second extension for Vishwanathan. In fact, she had opposed Kumar’s move tooth and nail when the secretary-general was given the first extension 11 months ago.

Swaraj had opposed Vishwanathan’s extension on two grounds. In a letter to Kumar, she had expressed resentment over the “conduct and temperament” of Vishwanathan. Second, she had insisted that someone from the existing Lok Sabha secretariat should be promoted to the rank. At that time, Kumar had told Swaraj that no one in the secretariat fulfilled the qualifications and experience required for the given post.
